
Thiourea is a sulfur-containing organic compound with the chemical formula CH4N2S and a relative molecular weight of 76.12. It appears as white, lustrous crystals with a bitter taste, a density of 1.405 g/cm³, and a melting point of 182℃. It is soluble in water, soluble in ethanol upon heating, and slightly soluble in ether. It is hygroscopic in air. Thiourea has reducing properties, reducing free iodine to iodide ions. It reacts with various oxidizing agents to produce urea, sulfuric acid, and other organic compounds. Upon melting (170℃), it partially isomerizes to thiocyanate. Thiourea can form complexes with salts of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, copper, silver, and bismuth.
Thiourea is primarily used as a raw material for the synthesis of drugs such as sulfathiazole and methionine. It can also be used as a raw material for dyes and dyeing auxiliaries, resins and molding powders, as a vulcanization accelerator for rubber, a flotation agent for metal minerals, a catalyst for the production of phthalic anhydride and fumaric acid, and a metal corrosion inhibitor. In photographic materials, it can be used as a developer and toner, and it is also used in the electroplating industry. Thiourea is also used in many other areas, including diazo photographic paper, synthetic resin coatings, anion exchange resins, germination accelerators, and bactericides. Thiourea is also used as a fertilizer. It is used as a raw material in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, dyes, resins, molding powders, vulcanization accelerators for rubber, and flotation agents for metal minerals.
